So shows a group of letters in the William Cole Harrison collec- tio~ at Tulane University. While many of the letters are missing, especially the early ones, there are enough to decipher the unrequited love and sub- sequent life-long friend.ship. Willie, a handsome flirtatious eighteen year-old whose sister attended the Amite Female Seminary, spotted Eliza Jane Poitevent, a student also, standing by a fence and instantly fell in love. Eliza (She spelled it Elisa), popular among her classmates, and flirta- tious with the boys at the male seminary, awed by such passion and devo- tion a~so lost her-heart. So began the saga of young love, made difficult by fellow s tt~dents and the impetuous actions of both lovers. How often they were able to secret moments together is not know, but the romance was cut short by Reverend Shirk, Headmaster, who intercepted one of Ellen's letters to Willie, notified her uncle, and summoned the young lady to his office. Even under threat of expulsion, Elisa refused to give up the pre- cious letters smuggled to her by Willie. But all was not lost, they could con- tinue their romance after graduation, or so Eliza thought? After com- mencement, when Eliza arrived home in Hobolochitto (now Picayune), she found that she was being held captive by her UncleLeonard and her fami- ly who felt she was too young for such affections and should look for a respectable man of means and age to court. When she received no mail and learned that letters were not delivered or received, even with her best friend Beck, a catalyst in the romance, she became desperate and man- aged to send one letter to Willie asking him to meet her on her brother's steamboat that would be docked in New Odeans. During that bdef meet- ing, when in the company of Elisa's friends and family, Willie had to reluc- tantly act the casual friend. Elisa was, however, able to slip hima promise - ' C~lebrate Jesus:~ The Christ event wasso signifi- cant that virtually the entire world has restarted its calendar because of it.
